Afghan Refugee Support Project

Following our work with Russian Speaking women in the UK in 2019, we completed a project to assist Afghan migrants and refugees with English language tuition and support towards employment and self-sufficiency in 2022. We welcomed Afghan migrants and refugees to attend our project activities including English Classes, job search, employment support and mental health services.

While our activities were open to all, we particularly focused on providing support to Afghan women. We organized English classes and social workshops to help them build their lives in London and find community. 34 Afghan women participated in our English language classes ranging from beginner to intermediate to develop their speaking and writing abilities. At the end of the courses, women achieved basic grammatical accuracy and acquired the necessary reading, writing, and listening skills to communicate effectively.

We organized several social activities including 2 workshops on using wool. At these workshops, women came together and learned how to create art using wool. They said that these workshops greatly improved their happiness and mental health because they were provided a space to come together and create art. We also facilitated a successful event for International Women's Day for 35 Afghan women. The event consisted of talks on female empowerment, poetry, group discussions and was an opportunity to meet new women and connect further outside of class.

HealthProm continues to support Afghan families in London. We currently provide SIM cards, laptops to families in need of technological support and offer advice and assistance to families with children on navigating the UK-school system.
